During my studies I was particularly interested in the intersection of politics and religion. I collected some of these images of Jesus with particular cultural or political meanings. Often Jesus is depicted as white and of European decent. These images take familiar representations and add meanings that contextualize them for the artist and audience. Unfortunately I have lost the sources of the images, but remember some information on some of them. Let me know if you can provide more context.
Jesus draped in the US flag with caption "and they crucified him" - from the first issue of The Post American - a magazine which became Sojourners, a Christian magazine focused on social justice issues.
This image is of a sculpture by a Latin American artist. The sculptor depicts their own torture using the image of a tortured Christ.
Another crucifixion image from Latin America.
An image from the Cameroon, Jesus in native dress on the cross.
